Richmond not so sweet as home racetrack Several drivers hail from Virginia, but only Burton has had success By Josh Pate, NASCAR.COM May 5, 2006 10:32 AM EDT (14:32 GMT)
Welcome home Denny Hamlin ... and Jon Wood ... and Ashton Lewis, Mark McFarland and Danny O'Quinn Jr. Oh, and Jeff Burton. And Elliott Sadler.
Is that all?
You'd think the Busch Series is headquartered in Richmond the way this weekend is turning out to be a homecoming festivity.
Roger Penske's No. 39 Busch Series car has treated its drivers well. Credit: Autostock NEWMAN TO DRIVE NO. 39 Ryan Newman will drive Roger Penske's No. 39 Dodge Friday night at Richmond.
It will be Newman's third Busch race this season, with finishes of second at California and 39th at Atlanta after a crash took him out.
But it will be the fifth race for the No. 39 car.
Kurt Busch has two starts in the ride. At Texas, he won in his first career Busch Series start. Two races later, at Phoenix, he finished fourth.
Winning isn't new to the machine. Last year, Newman drove in nine races and produced six victories and a couple of third-place finishes.
In two years, the No. 39 car has an average finish of 5.69. Throw out Newman's crash at Atlanta earlier this year, and the average finish is 2.91.
Victory LaneKurt Busch celebrates his first victory in the Busch Series Sign up for TrackPass now BUY THE NEXTEL i836 All seven of the aforementioned drivers hail from the Commonwealth, and they'll all be looking for a little home cooking when the lights turn on and the flag drops on Friday's Circuit City 250 (7:30 p.m. ET, FX).
"I can't wait for this weekend's race at Richmond," said Hamlin, who is from Chesterfield and admits that being pulled in different directions during his time home can be stressful.
Add to that the fact he cut his hand and had to be stitched up after mid-week testing at Lowe's Motor Speedway, and Hamlin will be working double-time to overcome the distractions.
"I am trying to treat this weekend like a regular race weekend," he said. "This is a track I definitely want to win at."
Join the club, kid.
Wood, who is from Stuart and part of the homegrown Wood Brothers' family tree, will start his third race at his home track -- a track at which he's never won in a stock car. He has finishes of 35th and 17th from last year.Lewis is from Chesapeake and has run 12 times at the .75-mile, D-shaped track. He was second in 2002, but that was as close as he's gotten to frontrunner status.
McFarland, from Winchester, has been there four times, with a career-best of 16th in 2004. But he's coming off a career run at Talladega, where he recorded his first top-10 finish.
"Now we're going to a track that I actually have some laps on and we tested really well there earlier this year," McFarland said, "so we're looking to get another top-10 under our belts on Friday."
O'Quinn has never raced there in a stock car, but a surprise victory may be extra-special for him. He's turning 21 on Friday.
"That would be a nice birthday present," said O'Quinn, who is from Coeburn.
That leaves Burton, and he has won at Richmond.
Twice.

2005 RichmondCatch all the highlights from last spring's Busch race at Richmond Sign up for TrackPass now BUY THE NEXTEL i836 Burton guided his machine to Victory Lane in 1998 and again in 2000. He's earned two pole positions (1991 and 1999). He's led 570 laps there, almost twice as many as anyone else who will race Friday. He's got seven top-fives, 10 top-10s and the last three races for Burton at Richmond have been runs of third (2002), ninth (2001) and first (2000).
No wonder he likes the place.
"I just think for the teams, for the fans and for everybody that it takes to make this sport work, it's the best all-around track," said Burton, who is from South Boston and will drive the No. 29 RCR entry in what will be his 250th career Busch Series start.
"Richmond has good racing action. It's big enough where it's not wreck after wreck, but small enough where it's close side-by-side action since you have multiple grooves. To me, it's a really hard racetrack to beat competition-wise."
The other Virginia natives agree.
"We've had some bad luck the last couple of weeks," Hamlin said, "and I don't know any better medicine than a good short track under the lights."
But is it a short track?
"It really is a little of both," said Kevin Harvick, who after a point-deduction penalty following Talladega, leads the standings by 274 over RCR teammate Clint Bowyer, neither of which, by the way, are from Virginia.
"But I think you have to go in with the short-track mindset. There is more contact at Richmond than you have at a bigger track. I think sometimes drivers use the short track as an excuse to beat and bang, but as tight as the racing is there, it's hard not to have incidental contact."
It's also hard to dance with the other 42 drivers and not get aggressive. So Hamlin's team -- and presumably 42 others -- is content with jumping right to the point.
"We are going to unload with an aggressive setup for the race," said Dave Rogers, Hamlin's crew chief. "We know that this race is really important to Denny and we want to give him the best shot to win this."
